Presiding officer: Chancellor Nancy Cantor The Chancellor called the meeting to order, proposed that the minutes of the November 7th meeting be approved as written, and the body concurred. She called Prof. Can Isik to make the report of the Agenda Committee. Prof. Isik told the body that in the spring the Budget committee intended to bring a motion to amend the bylaws, revising the committee’s charge. He said that notice would be sent in the packet beforehand. He also asked that committees that had proposals involving the budget consult with the Budget committee early in the process of their deliberations. The Chancellor called on Prof. Eric Johnson to present the report of the Curriculum committee, which included a motion to approve the new courses and course and program changes (from Arts and Sciences, Human Services and Health Professions, Architecture, Engineering and Computer Science) listed in the report. The motion carried. The Chancellor called Prof. Larry Elin, who presented the report of the Committee on Academic Affairs, which included a motion to approve a name and status change for the Women’s Studies Program to Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, effective immediately. In the discussion, the question arose of whether the College of Arts and Sciences had discussed and signed off on the proposed change, and what division it would fall under. Prof. Alcoff rose to respond, saying that it had been discussed in the college curriculum committee, but not in the Faculty Council. She said that she was unsure of the process of approval, and that if senators thought the matter needed to be presented to other bodies, that she would do so. She said that it was interdisciplinary in nature, and thus did not fall under any specific division. After further discussion of the college role, a senator rose to call the question, and the body voted in favor of the motion. Under Old Business, the Chancellor reported on the status of discussions with the U.S. Dept. of Defense re: its policy on gays in the military. She told the body that there was a movement within the Dept. of Defense, as well as discussion in Congress, calling for a review of the policy. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. Teresa Gilman University Senate Recorder
