Presiding Officer: Vice Chancellor Deborah Freund

In the absence of the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor Freund called the meeting to order and welcomed Senate members. She told the body that the day's business consisted of a report from the Agenda Committee, followed by committees breaking out into various rooms to organize and elect chairs. She invited all of those present to a reception outside the auditorium afterwards. The Vice Chancellor expressed her thanks to the many members of the University community who had welcomed students displaced by Hurricane Katrina and helped them in various ways. Freund said that SU had been the first university to announce that any student displaced by the hurricane could enroll at SU, through University College, and that thus far 103 undergraduates had enrolled (91 from Tulane, 2 from the University of New Orleans, 10 from Loyola; 9 graduate students, including 6 in law; and 100 students at the various DIPA sites). The Vice Chancellor called Prof. Bruce Carter, chairman of the Agenda Committee, to present a brief report.

Prof. Carter told the body that his report included a motion to approve changes in committees listed in the report of the Subcommittee on Nominations, as follows:

The motion carried. Prof. Carter reminded Senate members that Senate committees were put together by a subcommittee of the Agenda Committee, and voted on by the full Senate. He said that committee chairs could make suggestions to this subcommittee, but that the final decision was up to the Senate itself.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
